Poetic Device #2: Alliteration
March 6, 2007Alliteration is the repetition of letters and sounds for effect. It is often used by authors and poets. The effect can be:
…spooky – The silver spider slowly sidled towards her.
…funny – Oh buzz off you big, blue-faced baboon.
…exciting – Frantically the fox ran faster throughthe furrows.
Poets use alliteration like painters use different colours — for effect!
This is the beginning of a counting poem that uses alliteration for a comic effect:
One waggly walrus won a wet wager.
Two trustful tigers tumbled out for tea.
Three thin thrushes thumped a thich theif.
Here’s another:
One wonky wheelchair wobbling wildly.
Two tatty Toyotas turning.
Three thrilling Thunderbirds throbbing.
Which poem do you like best?
YOUR TASK: With a partner, create your own counting poem using the numbers from one to ten. Add your completed poems to this post as comments, and then prepare a paper copy of your poem which includes hand-drawn (& colored) pictures.
One wet waterslide wet the walrus’s bed
Two timid tigers tried very hard to solve a puzzle
Three thirsty thunderbirds thumping

Five fires blazed Friday
Six step stools stayed
Seven smelly sox stayed home for supper

This wasn’t the one me and my partner came up with though, we will post that later!!!
